{"id":1298,"date":"2010-06-07T09:50:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T16:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=1298"},"modified":"2025-11-03T10:04:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T17:04:30","slug":"kids-and-money-its-working","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=1298","title":{"rendered":"Kids and Money &#8211; Its working"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>So my system of teaching my kids about money is working.\u00a0 The oldest (almost 13\u00a0 now) can&#8217;t wait to get a job and make money.\u00a0 The middle one was so excited about a field trip at school he woke up early, got ready so fast he was bored and decided to DO CHORES.\u00a0 Independently!\u00a0\u00a0 I was so\u00a0 impressed I raised his allowance!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>And the youngest (who&#8217;s managed to somehow inherit my ability to say the funniest things!) &#8230; well, he did this.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>On the way home in the early am from a play date one Saturday (the kids think I go to the gym 7 days a week now at the crack of dawn before they get up.) I saw a garage sale sign at the end of our block.\u00a0 It listed video games as one of the things for sale.\u00a0 So when I got home I asked who wanted to walk down with me and see if they had anything to buy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>The oldest and the youngest agreed and the 3 of us trudged down the hill to see the wares of the garage sale.\u00a0 The oldest was disappointed that the video games were all for a system he didn&#8217;t have.\u00a0 But the youngest found a little water ring toss game he thought was cool.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>&#8220;How much\u00a0 is this, Mom?&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know, maybe you should ask them.&#8221; <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Conor finds the teenage son selling the stuff and boldly interrupts.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>&#8220;Excuse me, how much is this ring toss game?&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>&#8220;Fifty cents.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>I watched Conor get crestfallen at the news and I grinned.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8216;Cuz I knew it wasn&#8217;t what you would think.\u00a0 Most would assume he didn&#8217;t have enough money for the game.\u00a0 I knew he had several dollars in his wallet, but what he did not have was &#8220;fifty cents.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>&#8220;Do you give change?&#8221;\u00a0 He asked with just a worried note in his voice. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>The guy heard, &#8220;Do you have change&#8221; and said, &#8220;Oh yea sure.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Conor smiled big&#8230; just amazed at his good fortune!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>You should see how excited he gets when he realizes he&#8217;d get a penny if he bought something for $1.99..
