{"id":2082,"date":"2011-04-14T08:39:22","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T15:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=2082"},"modified":"2011-04-14T08:39:22","modified_gmt":"2011-04-14T15:39:22","slug":"julie-julia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=2082","title":{"rendered":"Julie &#038; Julia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Free movie marathon for 4 days on my cable this last weekend and I just picked ANYTHING that looked remotely interesting.\u00a0 In the course of that I watched <em>Julie &amp; Julia<\/em>, the movie about the writer who wrote a blog about cooking from Julia Child&#8217;s cookbook.\u00a0 The scenes with Meryl Streep as Julia Childs are brilliant.\u00a0 And the other story line is very interesting also.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>But hit a bit close to home at one point.\u00a0 She moans that no one is reading her blog but her mother.\u00a0 Then suddenly she has lots of readers, many who comment and some who send her gifts!\u00a0 Then months later the New York Times does a story on her from her blog and BAMM, she has 64 messages from agents calling and publishers interested in having her do a book.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>And I burst into tears.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Because its every writer&#8217;s dream to be valued like that.\u00a0 To have people WANT to validate your talent and work.\u00a0 And turns out, its incredibly difficult to obtain.\u00a0\u00a0 An agent has to work just as hard as the writer to try and get a book published.\u00a0 And an editor has to fight within their own COMPANY to get the book they&#8217;ve contracted the best sales deal and marketing they can.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Because everyone&#8217;s career hangs in the numbers.\u00a0 The first 3 months and end of year sales numbers.\u00a0 Even if the book is a <em>masterpiece<\/em>, it may not have the numbers to make ANYONE want to invest in that author\/agent\/editor again.\u00a0 So in an incredibly strange sense.. it&#8217;s like playing the lottery!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>And sadly&#8230;.
