{"id":227,"date":"2009-06-27T09:21:31","date_gmt":"2009-06-27T16:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=227"},"modified":"2025-11-09T10:19:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T17:19:16","slug":"people-are-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=227","title":{"rendered":"People are Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I often find I&#8217;m most creative driving in my car.\u00a0 (I&#8217;ll wax poetic about how much I love my baby later, when I&#8217;ve got a pix.)<\/p>\n<p>When you see a make\/model\/type\/color of a car you make instant judgements about the driver.\u00a0\u00a0 Because you assume they chose that vehicle for a reason and that alone telegraphs things about them.\u00a0\u00a0 And humans are trained from birth to try and pick up the littlest nuance about the world around them.<\/p>\n<p>Yet sometimes when you pull up to that particular car you are surprised by <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">what<\/span>\u00a0 who is driving it.\u00a0 The vehicle is saying one thing but the interior is saying something COMPLETELY different.<\/p>\n<p>The point&#8230;yes there is one, even though it seems I meander hopelessly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The point is people are like cars.\u00a0 Our bodies are just the vehicles our <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">craziness<\/span>\u00a0 personality rides in.\u00a0\u00a0 But it&#8217;s also the physical expression of our personality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now before we all start screaming the debate of Nature vs Nurture, let&#8217;s look at twins.\u00a0 Same basic template, two different souls&#8230;how do they differ as they age?\u00a0\u00a0 Look at the two actors in the Disney show Suite Life of Zach and Cody.\u00a0 You can see one starting to get a little chunkier.\u00a0 I imagine that&#8217;s the personality making decisions that alter the template.\u00a0 (I&#8217;d rather play video games and eat than play ball.)<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side to that is the fact that our bodies influence us tremendously.\u00a0 It tells us when its hungry (ALL the time), tired and probably a million other signals on the unconscious level.\u00a0 That has an impact on the personality template.\u00a0 So I imagine it&#8217;s a <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">hideous dance<\/span>\u00a0 wonderful balance between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Then you factor in &#8220;free will&#8221; and you get back to what your car choice says about you.\u00a0 Statistically, a very high number of obese women were sexually abused in some way in their childhood.\u00a0 The fat is a defense mechanism to make themselves unattractive so &#8220;that&#8221; won&#8217;t happen again.\u00a0 Works incredibly well!\u00a0\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t make the woman happy, though.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I could go on and on comparing cars to people and what their choices say about who they are.\u00a0\u00a0 But we&#8217;ve heard it all before.\u00a0 We know all this and still make our own choices for our own reasons.\u00a0\u00a0 Free will, remember.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You\u00a0choose a vehicle for your own reasons and then think you can&#8217;t change that vehicle, even though you&#8217;ve changed, just because its still a perfectly good vehicle with plenty of miles still left on it.<\/p>\n<p>But we can customize it!\u00a0\u00a0 Keep it washed and waxed so it shines.\u00a0 Put bumper stickers that reflect the driver&#8217;s personality and blast our music out the open windows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if anyone else other than me does this, but I often forget what people really look like.\u00a0 In my memory they are just their personality.\u00a0\u00a0 The packaging that personality is in, I often forget the details, green eyes vs. blue eyes, etc.\u00a0 Not saying I&#8217;m not going to recognize you&#8230;but I just cease to recognize certain aspects of the &#8220;car&#8221; you&#8217;re driving.\u00a0 I forget the make and model and just see enough basics to match you physically with that sparkling soul that is you in my memory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s because I&#8217;m weird&#8230;or a writer&#8230;or just a Californian.\u00a0 I rarely &#8220;define&#8221; a person by their exterior.\u00a0 If I like you its because of the driver in the car.\u00a0\u00a0 And guess what&#8230;if you annoy me, irritate me, disgust me or piss me off&#8230;well again, THE DRIVER!<\/p>\n<p>Not that the Chassie isn&#8217;t important!\u00a0 Personality aside if you&#8217;re &#8216;vehicle&#8217; is screaming &#8220;don&#8217;t have sex with me&#8221; I&#8217;m gonna hear it and so is everyone else no matter what the driver happens to be yelling out the window!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I often find I&#8217;m most creative driving in my car.\u00a0 (I&#8217;ll wax poetic about how much I love my baby later, when I&#8217;ve got a pix.)
