{"id":242,"date":"2009-07-01T09:55:03","date_gmt":"2009-07-01T16:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=242"},"modified":"2025-11-09T10:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T17:18:11","slug":"irregular-verbage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=242","title":{"rendered":"Irregular Verbage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I read the most interesting bit in Discover Magazine.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The bit was by Stephen Ornes about how a Harvard University mathematician named Erez Lieberman created a formula that shows that verbs, slowly over time, change from irregular to regular.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The article helpfully reminded me the difference between a regular and irregular verb, because lets face it, who really remembers from English class.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Regular verbs are the ones whose past tense ends in <strong>\u201ced\u201d,<\/strong> like helped and the irregular verbs have no logic to their past tense.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">The article claimed that it takes approximately 5400 years (if an unpopular verb) to 38,800 years (if popular) from an irregular verb\u2019s past tense to change.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So it\u2019s a long time to wait for held to become holded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">And I thought\u2026Hell, I can speed that up!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">If every mother and teacher stopped correcting the natural process of this change in their children we&#8217;d have this crazy language issue cleared up in about 2 generations!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Every child automatically makes all past tense verbs regular verbs.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the adults who then, possibly in an effort to drive our children wonky, correct their child that the proper past tense is this completely unrelated word or worse\u2026the same word!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did you <strong>read<\/strong> your book?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I <strong>read<\/strong> it an hour ago.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">It would be so nice <strong>NOT<\/strong> to correct the children when they make these normal grammatical mistakes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>No one likes it when they get interrupted just so someone can be superior and announce they have used the incorrect word.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It ruins the story flow!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">Imagine how we could raise the I.Q.\u2019s of <strong>so<\/strong> many ignorant people, just be abolishing irregular verbs!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;
