{"id":1231,"date":"2010-05-03T08:57:09","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=1231"},"modified":"2010-05-03T08:57:09","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:57:09","slug":"me-and-europe-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=1231","title":{"rendered":"Me and Europe (Update)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>In writing about one adventure I realized I forgot a <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">crucial<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">hysterical<\/span> embarrassing part of my trip to Europe. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>My mother had fabulous grandparents who owned the famous &#8220;Pink House&#8221; on South Coast Drive in La Jolla.\u00a0 Yes, THAT famous\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartonrentals.com\/\">Pink House<\/a>.\u00a0 They were the parents of my narcissistic grandmother who I despise for her warped sense of the word &#8220;fair.&#8221;\u00a0 And whom I take my pen name &#8220;Barton&#8221; from in hopes I can publish a really dirty book with <em>HER<\/em> last name on it (as I took it as my pen name) and present it to her.\u00a0 Hopefully I&#8217;ll be near when she has the heart attack!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Anyway, my beloved grandmother&#8217;s family was from a little town in Germany called\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gimmeldingen\">Gimmeldingen<\/a>.\u00a0 While lecturing in Germany my mother was determined to visit this town that\u00a0 her family was known to come from.\u00a0 And since its also known as wine country, she wanted to buy and have shipped to America a bottle of wine from this town to all her relatives.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>But.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s always a but!\u00a0 Besides the fact I thought she was crazy for wanting to gift to her relatives (see I KNEW these people, too!)\u00a0 We were on a lecture tour.\u00a0 So the only day we have free is Sunday.\u00a0 BUT this does not stop her.\u00a0 The local church (small town, only ONE church) was, of course, open and she goes in and asks to see their ANCIENT registry bible.\u00a0 Where they have listed all the births and deaths in the little town.\u00a0 She finds the name of her great, grandfather.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Now, I&#8217;m heartily embarrassed by all this <em>TOURISM<\/em> she&#8217;s doing and I sanely refuse to accompany her in her madness.\u00a0 Oh, BUT she takes it to the streets.\u00a0 It is here she tells me she wants to buy wine for everyone.\u00a0 BUT all the wineries are closed.\u00a0 ITS SUNDAY!!\u00a0 BUT that doesn&#8217;t stop her! <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>She begins to <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">pound<\/span> knock on all the doors of the wineries until she finds one that 1. Answers, 2. Speaks English and 3. Agrees to sell to the crazy American.\u00a0 I&#8217;m standing in the deserted street (REALLY small town, like empty small) trying to pretend I&#8217;m not with her.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>BUT she manages it all.\u00a0 Ends up buying about 10 bottles of wine and paying to have each one individually shipped to a relative.\u00a0 She&#8217;s happy and the cooperative winery got to make a nice unexpected sale.\u00a0 None of the recipients every thanked her.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Which illustrates the lesson, Never Try to Impress People.\u00a0 Those whose attention you are craving aren&#8217;t going to give you more attention by your acts and those who love you already don&#8217;t need acts to shower you with attention.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Or in other words.\u00a0 I was right.\u00a0 <em>Duh!<\/em> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In writing about one adventure I realized I forgot a crucial hysterical embarrassing part of my trip to Europe.
