{"id":1235,"date":"2010-05-24T06:53:06","date_gmt":"2010-05-24T13:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=1235"},"modified":"2010-05-24T06:53:06","modified_gmt":"2010-05-24T13:53:06","slug":"me-and-scotland-omg-part-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heatherbarton.com\/?p=1235","title":{"rendered":"Me and Scotland (OMG Part three!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Okay..  to recap from Part One &amp; Two&#8230; London, Bath, Stonehenge, York, Hadrian&#8217;s Wall, Edinburgh, Geddes.\u00a0 Trains, taxi, Big Patricia, food poisoning, Birds. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Once on the road again from the exciting town of Geddes, we got back on the highway and headed for<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> Inverness. Along the way I was able to do the ONE thing I wanted to do all trip (No, NOT what you&#8217;re thinking!)\u00a0 I got to stand in (okay, near) a field of Heather.\u00a0 Turns out Heather is very common because its a short, tough, prickly bush!\u00a0 With small, pretty flowers.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Once in Inverness, we took a horseback tour of Loch Ness.\u00a0 No monster.\u00a0 It was also where we turned in the car!\u00a0 Yeah!!!\u00a0 I was very, very happy to get back on the scenic and relaxing trains.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Yet we had to do a bit of shopping.\u00a0 Having read Fodors&#8217; guide I knew we were in Cashmere country and the little town of Elgin was known well for its yummy cashmere.\u00a0 So we popped off the train and had the taxi driver take us to his favorite cashmere shop.\u00a0 He only had to wait a few hours while we shopped because the selection in our price range was pretty limited! <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Once back on the train we took the route along the western coast and saw the countryside where golf was invented.\u00a0 It was beautiful.\u00a0 We passed through Aberdeen and headed to Sterling, home of the famous William Wallace.\u00a0\u00a0 We could have easily enjoyed a day touring the city.\u00a0 But had only hours, so we had a taxi driver give us a quick tour.\u00a0 Which included the sites like, &#8220;There&#8217;s the place they housed the crew for filming Braveheart, and here&#8217;s where Mel Gibson stayed.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">We spent that night in a Castle between\u00a0 Sterling and Glasgow.\u00a0 It was quite authentic and had a formal dinner which we had to dress fancy for.\u00a0 I got to prove to my mother that I remembered ALL those manners she&#8217;d taught me as a child which I rarely used because I don&#8217;t hang with people who go to &#8220;formal dinners!&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The trip ended in Glasgow which is an industrial city and look a lot like any city in America or London.\u00a0 And was also where we had arranged for my mother to do a small lecture so she could write off the entire adventure as a business expense! <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Knowing the trip was ending we took a fast train to London and\u00a0 hoped on a plane home.\u00a0 Thoroughly relaxed and smiling.\u00a0 Everything went pretty much as planned and spontaneously as we&#8217;d hoped.\u00a0 We knew basically where we were going and where we&#8217;d be staying and all the little details in between were delightful surprises.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Best way to travel.\u00a0 I highly recommend it.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay.. to recap from Part One &amp; Two&#8230; London, Bath, Stonehenge, York, Hadrian&#8217;s Wall, Edinburgh, Geddes.\u00a0 Trains, taxi, Big Patricia, food poisoning, Birds.
