Good Tips for the beauty newbie

I found an interesting article in a beauty magazine.  (Hey.. it was accidentally delivered… to my mother… I SWEAR!)   In any case, it answered at least ONE question I’d been pondering.  And I realized some of the info was worth passing along.

TIPPING:  Apparently, you’re supposed to tip EVERYONE who you come in contact with, except the owners (oh, gee thank god for THAT  one), at a high end beauty shop.  Which is why I go to a low end shop where there IS no coat check, separate shampoo person, & assistant who blow dries.  That’s all done by the same person at my shop.. so I just tip her 20%.  Done deal.

Although it did state that the average tip for a manicure is $5.00 even if you’re just getting a $10 quickie at the local mall.  Makes it worthwhile to just get the Mani/Pedi deal if you’re going to spend $15.00 anyway!  Cuz, yes, if I don’t do it myself (or have Sex God do it) then I go to the local mall for my mani/pedi.

HAIR STYLISTS:  Go with a clear idea of what you want seems redundant.  We all THINK we know, but get all vague and kinda hopeful the stylist will pull a Next Top Model make-over suggestion.   So bring in a magazine picture.  Better yet, bring in a pix you have of a style you’ve worn that you like! And if you don’t like the job they do, tell them before you leave to give them a chance to fix it.  Hopefully they won’t make it worse!  Not bad advice.  But remember also, if you can only afford to cut your hair 3-4 times a year tell your stylist so they can give you a low-maintenance cut.

FACIALS: I loved this one, made me giggle.  The first thing right off they tell you to be honest if you are using any chemicals like Retin A on your face.  THEN they tell you to also STOP using Retin A 3 days before a peel or laser treatment and a week before facial waxing.  I’m thinking.. if you’re using BOTH are you a little obsessed?

MASSAGE: The only useful suggestion in this part was the dose of common sense to NOT worry about hair or stubble or whether you nails or toenails look good.  The massage therapists isn’t judging you… she’s working!  lol  Besides the lights are too low to see anything clearly!

And Finally… WAXING:  Here’s where the nuggets of info just fell and fell.  Tell them upfront if you want a Brazilian not just a Bikini so they can schedule the right length of time for your appointment.  Very good tip.  And no matter how unkempt you feel DO NOT trim before a waxing.  The waxer will do it if needed.  As a matter of fact don’t shave the area for 3 weeks prior to a waxing.  And remember a Brazilian needs full nudity, so no shyness.

Which was exactly the question I’d been contemplating.  WHEN to spend the outrageous sum to try a Brazilian and what do I need to know before hand.

Besides the fact its going to hurt!

Lucky for me I kinda like that kind of “take it” type of hurt. 😉
